A big congratulations goes out to the members of the 2014 Bishop Lynch Winter Color Guard. This last weekend the winter guard competed at the NTCA State Winter Guard Championships and returned home with the Silver Medal! A great performance was turned in by the members of the winter guard and the judges were quite impressed. Bishop Lynch was the highest scoring private school at the championships and continues to be the most decorated private school in the North Texas Color Guard Association. Once again...congratuations!
The award winning Colorguard and Winterguard are an important part of the Bishop Lynch Friar Band family. Guard is one of the few activities that does not require any previous experience or training and is open to anyone who wants to join.
Colorguard adds to the visual effect of the BL Band half time show; (the school colors are black and white!! ). This is a first semester class earning ½ PE credit under the course title “Marching Band”. During this semester the guard joins the band from the beginning of band camp in August through the Christmas Concert in December. The Guard members begin by working with different types of flags, and progress into working with weapons (rifles, and sabres). Guard members can earn their BL letter through participation in this class. The Colorguard performs at every BL football game, and marching band contest. As part of the band, the Colorguard is also represented at a multitude of activities including eighth grade visits, pep rallies, BL Sunday, the Neiman Marcus Adolphus Children’s Parade, and the Christmas concert.
Winterguard participates in indoor competitions, performing separately from the concert band. This is a second semester class earning ½ Fine Art credit under the course title “Symphonic Band”. The Winterguard competes in the North Texas Colorguard Association circuit. Contests are held on Saturdays from January through March at various host locations in the metroplex. Previous semester Colorguard participation is highly recommended. Gym-practice day is mandatory for performing members. Currently Gym-practice day is Sunday afternoon. The Winterguard also travels with the band during the spring contest trip, performs at freshman rally, and the spring concert. We wrap up the year with the annual Band Banquet held at a local country club.
